10 Simple Ways To Green Up

Everyone seems to have a "10 ways to go green' list these days, but I thought I would give you some simple things you can do that I did not see mentioned everywhere to help you green up.

1) Use Bill pay

Most banks offer bill-pay nowadays. Using your banks billpay or an online bill pay service helps to reduce paper waste and will also help to save fuel from your mail service having to deliver your bills. Paying your bills online also saves energy since your bill does not have to go through the sorting processes at both post offices.

2) Water Filter

Buy a water filter from your local store and fill up your own bottles or refill purchased bottles, instead of buying bottled water. By refilling a bottle a few times before discarding it you will be cutting back on the amount of plastic going into your local landfill. On average, one person uses 166 disposable plastic water bottles each year and americans add over 30 million plastic water bottles to our nation's landfills ~ everyday!

3) One man's junk is another man's gold

Instead of throwing out that usable 'junk' donate your reusable 'junk' to a second hand store, saving it from the landfill and helping out someone else who may need it. The salvation army as well as many other places take used stuff to resell to their customers, many of them needy, or use the parts from your stuff to repair broken stuff they have.

4) Use public transportation

Use public transportation at least once a week. It is not so bad, I have been car-less for almost 2 years now. There is times I could use one of course as well as times I wanted one, but overall public transportation works just fine. Try it for just one day a week.

5) Inflate tires to proper pressure

This is one of the easiest ones to do, but quite often overlooked. Just drive to your local tire shop they will check and air up your tires for you. If your tire is under inflated your car has to work harder to move itself, this uses more fuel, costs you more money, and pollutes our air even more.

6) AC filter

It is mid-summer now, by now your AC filter is probably full of dust and lint. Cleaning or changing your furnace / AC filter regularly helps you save money on your electric bill. Most new filters are under $10 if you shop around (hint - compare filter prices online).

7) Sprinkler Systems

If you have an underground sprinkler system, you probably have at least one sprinkler that is leaking or is not functioning properly. Spend a few minutes on a weekend and fix it! Also, check those hose connections if you use regular sprinklers, hose ends tend to leak after you hookup and unhook them several times, buy some new gaskets or new hose ends and replace them.

8) Reusable plates and silverware

Did you know they can use corn starch to make reusable 'paper' plates now? Use biodegradable, disposable dishes instead of paper plates for your barbecues this summer. Using these will help in tree cutting for paper purposes and save the landfill from filling up with more paper waste. Shop online for these.

9) Plant trees

You can order 10 free trees from arborday.org and plant them, last I checked you only had to pay a small shipping fee. The trees come as seedlings with planting instructions. Put your order in now, some of the trees they offer can be shipped and planted in the fall, while others have to be shipped and planted in the spring, depending upon where you live and what zone you are in (they have a zone map on the website for you to use). If you order trees, make sure you PLANT the trees!

10) Volunteer

Spend some time doing some community service projects. Volunteer with your city/county/state for litter pickup, tree planting, park projects, etc...

I hope I have given you a few things to consider and that you will take action. Living green completely these days is probably impossible due to our technology driven lifestyles. No one expects you to go completely green, but even if you just did a couple of these things it will help!

Seven Ways To Save On Taxes Next Year

Nobody likes paying taxes, so the procrastination factor when preparing them tends to be high. But the good news is that there are some things you can do now that will help you prepare for next years taxes. Here are seven great tax saving tips so that you can keep more of your hard earned dough!

1. Pay your January 1st mortgage payment a day early. If you mail out your mortgage check on December 31st, the interest deduction for that month will be good for the current year. This is true even if the check doesnt get cashed until after the new year.

2. Make a last minute donation. Under that same philosophy, consider putting any last-minute charitable donations on your credit card (for those that will allow it) on or before December 31st.

3. Defer that income one more day. This works with investments as well as earned income. If you get a year end bonus, request that it come in January rather than in December. If you are self employed, you can do all your billing at the end of the month so that the payments will come in after the first of the year. In regards to investments, some will allow you to postpone paying taxes until a later year even if the income is earned this year.

4. Look for every available credit and deduction. This tax saving tip seems obvious, but people miss deductions and credits that apply to them all the time. A credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in any amount you might owe, so the effects of having one or two of them on your return can be dramatic.

5. Donate your old clothes and furniture to your favorite charity. Cleaning out the attic, the closets, that spare room, and the garage is not only purifying but will help to decrease your taxes. Put everything together and then take the load to your favorite charity or charities. Make sure to get a receipt for your records. The wholesale fair market value of the items you donated is allowed as a charitable deduction.

6. Give your kids a job, in other words, put them on the payroll. If you have kids, and they are over fourteen, you can have them do some work for you around the house and pay them on a part time basis. That will allow you to shift some of your income that would be taxed at a higher tax bracket to their lower tax bracket. However there is one warning; watch their earnings because they will be considered when they get ready to go to college and their financial aide could be affected.

7. Invest in your childrens names. Your kids can each earn up to $700 in investment income without paying any taxes if they are over fourteen.

As painful as taxes and any related thoughts of them can be, by following these great tax saving tips, you will save money this yearand the next. One final tip; dont procrastinate until the last minute! Preparing for your taxes year round will force you to keep your eyes open for saving possibilities, and will likely reduce your tax bill even more!

Learning Car Alarms

Personal safety is a top priority for everyone whether they are at home, at work or while traveling in their vehicle. Today it is easier than ever to automate your personal security while traveling with a smart car alarm system. The manufacturers of car alarm systems have developed new features that not only automate the process of alerting the driver of a problem with their vehicle but provide many ways to protect them as well.

Automobiles are very tempting targets for thieves because of their underground market value and the ability to sell them quickly. Sophisticated car thieves have developed a wide variety of techniques to steal a car and resell it as a complete unit or by taking it to a chop shop where the vehicle is stripped of its parts to be sold individually.

There are some car thieves that will purchase a car that has wrecked, search for a car of the same make and use the "switch and sell" method swapping the VIN numbers which is used to identify vehicles. Switching theses numbers of the wrecked car for the stolen one making it appear as though the stolen car had been wrecked instead.

Because automobiles for the most part are high ticket items that not every person can afford at full price the market for stolen cars is thriving to the tune of one car being stolen every 20 seconds. Most security experts advise vehicle owners to invest in a car alarm even though it is impossible to think here of car thieves completely. The car alarm systems that automate the notification process are preferred by most drivers because many times they may be out of range and here the alarm sounds.

Some of the car alarm systems that use the automated notifications feature are also available in models that work with two-way communication; they alert the driver that trying to steal their car and give the driver the ability to send a signal to the car that will make it impossible for the car and driven away because the fuel delivery system will be shut off. In other car alarm designs as sensors are designed to notify the driver of a particular type of intrusion into the vehicle; when the car is bumped by another car parking or if a thief is attempting to forcibly open the door.

However car thieves do not always work alone; in many cases because of the high demand for stolen vehicles are these will not attempt to open the car door instead many of these thieves used only equipments to lift the car into a truck and transport it away. Car alarm systems with an automated GPS tracking device that is perfect for this situation because it works based on the location of the car instead of forced entry.

Because of the high rates of car thefts and the real risk of personal injury to drivers, a car alarm system that can automate your vehicle security while keeping you out of harms way is a very wise investment. Although car alarm systems can be found very inexpensively in most cases they do not include automated features. When shopping for a car alarm with automated features think of your personal safety first and preventing the theft of your vehicle second.
